Know what the vaccine protects against, and finish the primary course.
Most livestock vaccination on a small farm comes down to two things: understanding what disease the vaccine is actually protecting against, and completing the full primary course correctly.
For many common livestock vaccines, that means an initial dose followed by a booster several weeks later. The exact product, interval and disease coverage vary by species and country, so the label on the product you are actually using remains the authority.
- A complete primary course is what builds reliable protection. Don't assume one dose is enough unless the label says so.
- Sheep, goats and cattle aren't on the same programme, and programmes vary by country too.
- The records are part of the job. The booster is the step most often missed, and it's missed because nobody wrote the date down.
- A vaccination programme has to fit the farm you actually run — which is a point we've had to work through ourselves.
🦠 What vaccination is protecting against
Clostridial disease, and why prevention carries so much weight.
Most small-farm vaccination is aimed at clostridial disease. Clostridia are bacteria that survive in soil for years as spores and live harmlessly in the gut of many healthy animals. They turn dangerous when conditions change — a wound, a sudden feed change, a gut upset, a difficult birth — then multiply quickly and produce toxins.
These are typically sudden, fast-moving diseases. In many cases an affected animal is found dead rather than found sick, which is the core reason prevention carries so much weight here.
The diseases that come up most, with the names you'll meet in different countries:
- Enterotoxaemia — called pulpy kidney in New Zealand, Australia, Britain and Ireland, and overeating disease in North America. Caused by Clostridium perfringens (types C and D). Often affects well-grown young stock on good feed.
- Tetanus — sometimes called lockjaw. Enters through wounds.
- Blackleg — muscle infection, typically in young growing cattle and sheep.
- Black disease — liver, often associated with liver fluke damage.
- Malignant oedema (edema in US spelling) — wound infection, including after husbandry procedures and after birth.
Two others are bundled into common products in some markets and sold separately in others: pasteurellosis/pneumonia (included in some British sheep vaccines) and leptospirosis, which has its own section below.

Which of these your local vaccine covers is a country question, not a global one. Two products described the same way in different countries can protect against different diseases.
💉 The primary course
Why finishing the course is what matters.
For many livestock vaccines, an unvaccinated animal needs a complete primary course — often two doses several weeks apart — to develop reliable protection. UK guidance for widely used sheep clostridial vaccines, for example, describes a primary course of two doses four to six weeks apart, followed by boosters at intervals of not more than twelve months.
One dose should not be assumed to provide full protection unless the product label specifically says so, and immunity takes time to develop after the course is finished. Don't assume the animal is fully protected until the primary course is complete and the label-specified time for immunity to develop has passed.
The practical message is simple: the booster matters, and forgetting it can leave the vaccination course incomplete. Nobody forgets the first dose — you were standing there holding the syringe. The second falls due several weeks later, usually in a busy stretch of the year.

What to record, and why it matters.
💡 The booster is where records matter most
At the time you give the first dose, record the product, the animals, the date and whether it was dose one — then create the reminder for the next dose before leaving the yards.
Vaccination is one of the clearest cases on a small farm where the record is part of the job. The animal looks identical before and after, and the programme depends on dates you can't reconstruct later.
Worth recording every time:
- What you gave — the product name, and the active if you know it
- When — the date, on the day
- Which animals — individual or group, but specific enough to answer "was this one done?"
- Which dose it was — first dose, second dose, or booster. The single most valuable field
- When the next one is due — worked out at the time
- Batch number and expiry, if you have a moment — this is what a vet will ask for if anything goes wrong
- Any withholding period stated on the label
Three months on, "which of these got the second dose?" is a genuinely hard question. Written down at the time, it's a lookup.
🔎 From our own block
A programme has to fit the farm you actually run.
On our Northland block, the ram runs with the ewes permanently, so I'm not always 100% sure when individual lambs are due. That makes it difficult to reliably time a pre-lamb vaccination programme around every ewe.
Because of that, I decided to run a post-lambing vaccination programme on our farm instead.
That experience reinforced an important lesson for me: a vaccination programme has to fit the real management system you actually run. A schedule that works perfectly on a tightly controlled commercial property may not fit a small mixed farm where mating dates aren't exact.
The important thing is to understand the protection you're trying to create, follow the product label and veterinary advice, and keep accurate enough records that the primary course and boosters aren't missed.

This is what we chose for our own farm and our own circumstances — not a recommendation that post-lambing vaccination is the right approach generally. That's a conversation for you and your vet.
🌍 Around the world
What products are called in different countries.
The principles above hold widely. The products don't. This is one of the most common ways people go wrong when they read advice written for somewhere else.
- New Zealand and Australia — common use of "5-in-1" clostridial vaccines and broader multivalent products (6-in-1, 10-in-1). Versions with trace elements added — B12/cobalt, selenium — are widely sold because of local soil deficiencies.
- Britain and Ireland — multivalent clostridial products, some of which also include pasteurella cover. Clostridial-only products in this market range up to ten components.
- United States and Canada — "CD&T" is a common small-ruminant core vaccine, covering C. perfringens types C and D plus tetanus. Broader clostridial products (often described as 7-way or 8-way) are also available and are used more in cattle.
⚠️ The product names are not equivalent
Do not assume that 5-in-1, CD&T, Heptavac, 7-way and 8-way all mean the same disease coverage. They don't. If you're reading a programme from another country, check what their vaccine actually contains before assuming yours is the same. "Fully vaccinated" means different things in different places.
And on combination products: where a vaccine is sold with trace elements added, that's a vaccine plus a supplement, not broader disease cover. Whether you need the supplement is a local-soils question for your vet.
🍼 Maternal immunity
Where newborns get their first protection.
Newborns aren't born with the immunity they need. For clostridial disease, protection passes through colostrum in the first hours of life, not across the placenta — which is why a vaccinated dam boostered ahead of birth is doing two jobs: protecting herself, and putting antibodies into her colostrum.
Maternal antibodies from colostrum provide temporary early protection, but the duration varies with the dam, the vaccine, the disease, colostrum intake and the product guidance.
For clostridial disease in lambs, that early cover is commonly described as lasting around six to eight weeks. MSD's own pre-lamb material illustrates why that figure has to be treated as approximate: in their schematic, antibody levels decline steadily from birth and cross the protective threshold at roughly six weeks for a lamb that got less colostrum — a twin, or one off a poorer mother — and closer to ten weeks for a well-fed single. Their graph is published as a schematic for illustration, not as a measurement.
💡 The spread is the useful part, not a footnote
How long a newborn stays covered depends on how much colostrum it actually got, how much it had to compete with a sibling for, and how many antibodies were in the dam's colostrum in the first place. Two lambs standing in the same paddock, the same age, can be weeks apart on that clock — and you can't tell which is which by looking at them.
Published guidance also varies by country, product and disease, so treat any single figure as approximate rather than universal.

The young animal's own primary course is designed to take over from that declining cover. Where in the animal's life that happens depends on the product and the local programme, which is why the timing question belongs with your vet and the label rather than with a general figure.
If the mother wasn't vaccinated — common on small farms, and the position we found ourselves in above — there's no colostrum-derived cover to hand over from, so the young animal's own course carries more of the load. The same applies to adults: stock that has never been vaccinated, or that you bought in with unknown history, generally needs a full primary course rather than a single booster-style dose.
🐑 Sheep
The most straightforward of the three.
A primary course, then regular boosters — with the breeding females' booster commonly timed ahead of lambing so that colostrum quality is at its best. UK guidance describes that pre-lambing booster as being given roughly four to six weeks before lambing; product labels differ on how early the dose can be given, so the label decides rather than the calendar.
Where lambing dates aren't tightly known, that timing gets harder — which is the situation described above, and a good example of why the programme is a farm-specific conversation.
🐐 Goats
Goats aren't simply small sheep.
Goats may require different booster intervals from sheep, and some veterinary guidance recommends more frequent clostridial boosters in goats. Where the product is specifically registered for goats, follow the label. Where it isn't, or where local veterinary guidance differs, discuss the programme with your veterinarian.
Many clostridial products used in goats were developed and registered with sheep and cattle primarily in mind, which is the practical reason goat programmes so often need a vet's input rather than a label read across from another species.
🐄 Cattle
Clostridial cover, plus a wider conversation.
Clostridial cover matters in cattle too — blackleg in particular is a young-cattle disease — and cattle-specific multivalent products exist in every market.
Cattle also bring vaccines into the conversation that sheep and goat keepers may not meet: depending on your region and system, your vet may raise BVD, salmonella or respiratory disease. Those are herd-specific decisions rather than general advice.
⚠️ Leptospirosis
The vaccine that protects people too.
If you keep livestock — particularly cattle — and people on the property regularly handle animals, urine, effluent or waterways, leptospirosis deserves a farm-specific discussion with your veterinarian.
It's a zoonotic disease, meaning it can pass from animals to people, and vaccination programmes vary by country, species and farm system. Cattle vaccination can protect both animal and human health, which makes it unusual among the vaccines on this page: the case for it isn't only about the animal.
Cattle are not the only livestock relevant to lepto risk, and exposure isn't limited to handling animals directly — water and effluent matter too. Which strains are present, which vaccines are registered, and who on your property is most at risk are all local questions.
✂️ Husbandry procedures
Docking, castration, disbudding and tetanus.
Docking, castration and disbudding create the conditions tetanus and other wound-associated clostridial infections need: a wound, in an animal in contact with soil where spores persist. That's why the timing of young stock's vaccination and the timing of these procedures are usually planned together.
Clean equipment, clean hands and clean rings matter for the same reason, as does avoiding wet, muddy conditions where you have the choice.

Permitted methods, age limits and pain-relief requirements differ by country and jurisdiction. Check current local rules before carrying out these procedures. 🌡️ Storage and handling
Looking after the product so it still works.
A vaccine exposed to excessive heat or freezing may lose effectiveness, so cold-chain handling matters from purchase through administration.
- Maintain the cold chain. Refrigerated vaccines are generally stored at 2–8°C (36–46°F); follow the storage instructions on your product.
- Do not freeze. Refrigerated vaccines should not be frozen — freezing can damage them, and a fridge that ices up is a real risk.
- Check the expiry date before you start.
- Follow the broached-bottle instructions. Products state how long a bottle may be used after first opening.
- Change needles regularly. Blunt or dirty needles are associated with injection-site problems, and changing between individual animals is considered best practice.
- Give it via the route stated on the label. Subcutaneous and intramuscular are not interchangeable.

What to actually do this week.
- Work out what's on your place and what its history is. Bought-in stock with unknown vaccination history should be treated as unvaccinated.
- Talk to your vet once, with your species list. Sheep, goats and cattle can need three different answers, and one conversation covers all of them. Raise leptospirosis if you have cattle or if people handle stock, effluent or waterways regularly.
- Read the label of the product you actually buy for the interval, the route, the storage conditions and the broached-bottle life. It overrides any general guidance, including this page.
- Book the next dose the day you give the first one — before you leave the yards.
- Record the date, the product and which dose it was, at the time.
- Diarise the next pre-birth booster while you're thinking about it.
