๐ Before you start
Why you might not be able to see it.
Production doesn't appear on every dashboard, because most blocks don't produce anything measurable in their first season. It shows up once an animal or flock has a purpose that implies production โ set an animal's Purpose to Dairy / Milking or Fibre / Wool in the Animals section and the Production card appears.
๐ Can't find it?
Two things to check. First, that at least one animal has a dairy, fibre or meat purpose set. Second, Settings โ What do you track?, where Production can be switched on or off directly. The settings panel explains this too โ some sections appear on their own when they become relevant, and this is one of them.
1๏ธโฃ Recording production
What, from whom, how much.
Use + Production record. The fields:
- Production type โ Milk, Wool, Honey or Other production.
- Applies to โ a herd / group or an individual animal. Pick individual where you can; that's what lets you compare animals later.
- Date, amount and unit โ the unit is free text, so litres, kg, bales or whatever you actually use.
- Notes.
Keep your units consistent within a production type. The app records what you type; it can't add litres to millilitres and know what you meant.
2๏ธโฃ Meat
It arrives from elsewhere.
You don't record meat here directly. It comes from two actions in other sections, both of which retire the animal and log the yield:
- Harvest / home-kill on an animal's record โ dressed weight, live weight, value, and whether it was home kill or works.
- Process for meat on a poultry flock โ birds processed, total dressed weight and value, with the bird count reduced.
Both post into Production, so your totals cover meat alongside milk and wool.
3๏ธโฃ Withholding
The check that matters most here.
Production is where withholding periods stop being paperwork. If you record milk from an animal still inside a milk withholding period, or wool from one inside a wool withholding period, the app knows โ because it calculated those dates from the treatment you logged.
Withholding is tracked separately for meat, milk, eggs and wool, plus a custom one you can label yourself. Set your products up once in Products & Chemicals with their label periods and the dates fill themselves in whenever you record a treatment.
โ ๏ธ Worth being straight about
The app calculates from what you enter. If the withholding days were typed in wrong, or the treatment was never recorded, it has nothing to warn you with. It's a safety net for records you keep, not a substitute for reading the label.
4๏ธโฃ What it's for
A season of records beats an impression.
Production totals show on Today's Brief and in the section itself. Over a season they answer things you'd otherwise only have a feeling about โ which ewe grows the most wool, whether the house cow is worth her feed, how this year's clip compares to last.
Paired with the allocations in Finances, it also closes the loop: what an enterprise produced against what it cost.
โ What the app does vs what you do
The honest split.
My Block Hand handles: dated production records against a herd or an individual animal; milk, wool, honey and other types in your own units; meat yields posted from harvest and poultry processing; totals on the dashboard; and withholding tracking for milk, wool, meat and eggs.
You still have to: weigh or measure it; keep your units consistent; enter withholding periods from the actual product label; and make the call on whether anything you produce is fit to use or sell.
This guide describes My Block Hand as at July 2026. Withholding periods are calculated from what you enter and are not a substitute for the product label. Rules around selling raw milk and other produce in New Zealand are set by MPI โ check mpi.govt.nz for your situation.
