How to hand-rear calves: colostrum, milk feeding, calf meal & weaning

Colostrum protects the newborn. Milk grows the calf. Solid feed develops the rumen. Good records tell you whether the whole system is actually working.

Four stages, in order.

Hand-rearing a calf is not just about getting milk into it. The job is moving the calf through four stages: colostrum → milk feeding → rumen development → weaning.

The first hours carry the most weight: calves are born with very little circulating antibody protection of their own and depend on colostrum for passive immunity. After that the system needs enough milk, consistent feeding, good hygiene, clean water, early access to calf meal or starter feed, regular growth checks and gradual weaning.

The aim isn't to keep a calf alive until the milk runs out — it's a calf growing well enough to live on solid feed.

Why might a calf need hand rearing?

An orphan calf, a pet calf raised at the house, and a dairy-beef calf bought in to rear are all the same job once the bottle starts. The reasons vary:

Where it's possible, rearing on a suitable dam simplifies the job enormously. Once a calf is artificially reared, consistency carries the weight: a calf copes well with a sensible system and badly with one that keeps changing between milk types, concentrations, feeding times and quantities.

How important is colostrum for a newborn calf?

It is the first priority, ahead of everything else here. Colostrum is the first milk after birth — antibodies, energy, fat, protein, vitamins and minerals — and calves are born without enough circulating antibodies of their own, so they depend on absorbing them from colostrum through the gut. That ability falls away fast.

Colostrum should go in as soon as possible after birth, and within the first 6–12 hours of life. At 24 hours old the calf's gut "closes" and can no longer absorb antibodies. After that point, colostrum is still good food — but the immunity window has shut.

How much does a newborn calf need?

DairyNZ (NZ dairy guidance): newborn calves need at least 10% of their bodyweight in good-quality colostrum — 4 litres for a 40 kg calf — split into two feeds, no more than 2 litres at a time.

MPI's dairy cattle welfare code puts the floor lower and the timing tighter: every calf should receive at least two litres, and preferably four, as soon as possible after birth and preferably within the first six hours — and colostrum should be fed for at least the calf's first four days.

The exact amount depends on calf size, colostrum quality and feeding method — but bodyweight is a far better starting point than judging by eye, and the 2-litre-per-feed ceiling is worth respecting even when a calf would happily take more.

What does "good-quality colostrum" actually mean?

Quality varies between cows and between milkings — first-milking or "gold" colostrum is the best you'll have, and it's what should go to newborns. The practical way to know is to measure it: DairyNZ's benchmark is that colostrum measuring 22% or more on a Brix refractometer is high quality. That's a current New Zealand calf-rearing benchmark, not an international legal threshold.

You cannot reliably judge colostrum quality by colour or thickness. Measuring it is more useful than guessing — and it's the one point in the whole rearing programme where being wrong can't be corrected later.

What if I don't know whether the calf got colostrum?

Common with calves found late, bought-in calves, difficult births, and any calf separated before anyone saw it suck. A calf can look completely normal and still not have absorbed enough antibodies — failure of passive transfer raises disease risk without changing how the calf looks on day one.

MPI's guidance for a calf suspected of missing out is to get colostrum or a substitute in within 24 hours. Treat the uncertainty seriously rather than assuming it probably got some.

What should I feed after colostrum?

Whole milk, a suitable calf milk replacer, or a managed combination — both work. What matters is adequate nutrition, correct mixing, consistency, feeding frequency and hygiene.

Whole milk brings good nutritional value and natural proteins and fats — but raw milk can transmit disease, which matters if it's bought in, shared between farms, or from cows of uncertain health status. DairyNZ are specific on one point: don't dilute vat milk, because dilution interferes with curding in the abomasum.

Milk replacer brings consistency, convenience and easy storage — but products differ. Use a reputable replacer suited to the calf's age; don't assume one powder fits every age or system.

⚠️ Don't make replacer stronger by guesswork

Replacers are formulated for a specific mixing rate. Extra powder doesn't make a better feed — it changes concentration, digestibility, water balance and osmotic load. Mixed too weak, it leaves the calf short of energy and protein. Follow the manufacturer's mixing instructions rather than adjusting by eye, and use scales or a consistent measure.

Changing between products is a managed transition, not a swap: DairyNZ suggest blending across several days — roughly 75:25, then 50:50, then 25:75. The same discipline applies to everything else. Avoid unnecessary changes in milk type, concentration, temperature, feed size and frequency, and don't stack them — change milk + move shed + vaccinate + disbud on one day is a bad week for an animal whose digestion is the thing you're trying to keep steady.

How much milk should I feed a bottle-fed calf?

This is the question where two current New Zealand sources will give you numbers that are roughly double each other, and it's worth understanding why before you pick one.

🔑 They aren't contradicting each other

The welfare code sets a floor — the minimum consistent with the animal's welfare. DairyNZ's figure is a growth target — what a calf needs to grow at its best. Read the first as "less than this is a problem" and the second as "this is what good looks like." Feeding to the floor and expecting target growth is the mistake in the middle.

The actual allowance depends on calf size, age, milk type, feeding frequency, growth targets, weather and the product's instructions. Bodyweight is a useful starting point, but the milk product and the calf's own growth should decide the final programme.

How often should I feed a calf?

More than once a day, early on. DairyNZ is direct about this: feeding calves once a day during the first two weeks does not fully meet their nutritional and behavioural needs. At least twice daily is the early-weeks standard, and ad-lib systems work too.

Once-a-day can suit some established systems later, with older calves. It is not the programme for a very young calf. Both MPI codes point the same way — at least two feeds a day in the first week.

If you're using an automatic or ad-lib feeder, the feeding maths gets easier and the hygiene gets harder. Neither disappears.

How clean does calf-feeding equipment need to be?

Very. Vulnerable young animals, warm milk, manure and shared equipment together make hygiene part of disease prevention rather than tidiness. MPI's dairy code requires that all equipment, including teats, buckets and calfeterias, is thoroughly cleaned after use — bottles, mixing containers and colostrum storage gear included. Don't let milk residue build up where you can't see it.

Warm is not the target.

MPI requires that newborn calves removed from their mothers get shelter from conditions likely to harm their welfare, and recommends housing that is well ventilated, with dry bedding and no draughts. Those two pull against each other, which is exactly why calf sheds go wrong — a closed shed feels warm but traps moisture, ammonia and pathogens, while a draughty one chills calves. The target is dry + fresh air + protection from cold wind, not simply a closed warm shed.

Respiratory disease is where that balance shows up, and both failures end in the same place. Watch for cough, nasal discharge, faster breathing, visible effort in breathing, dullness and falling feed intake — and remember it moves through a group quickly, so one affected calf is a reason to look hard at the rest.

Do calves need water if they're already drinking milk?

Yes — and it's the most under-rated item on this page. Milk and water do different jobs: milk largely bypasses the rumen through the oesophageal groove, while water goes into the rumen and supports microbial growth, fermentation, digestion of calf meal and the rumen's own development. DairyNZ put it plainly — water is needed for the rumen to develop and function.

DairyNZ cite research where early access to fresh, clean water led calves to eat more concentrate, earlier — and gain 38% more weight over four weeks. From a water trough. Put it near the meal, and clean and refill it rather than topping it up.

When should calves start eating meal?

Earlier than most people expect. DairyNZ's guidance is that calves should have access to meal or grain from birth to optimise rumen development — so a calf starter goes in front of them from the first days, not at three weeks.

At birth the rumen isn't functioning and the calf digests milk mainly in the abomasum. As it starts on solid feed, fermentation of meal or grain produces the fatty acids that build the rumen lining. The bottle feeds the calf. Calf meal develops the rumen.

Keep it fresh, dry, clean and easy to reach. A large bucket of stale or damp meal is not the same as a calf eating enough — and only one of those two is visible from the gate.

Fibre matters too. DairyNZ note that hay or straw promotes growth of the rumen's muscular layer and keeps the lining healthy under a grain diet. The aim isn't simply "give roughage" — it's supporting rumen development without displacing the higher-value starter feed a young calf needs.

How do I know if my calf is growing properly?

Weigh it. A calf that empties a bottle enthusiastically can still be growing poorly — appetite is not a measurement. Regular weights reveal poor nutrition, disease, low milk intake, an individual falling behind, and whether weaning is progressing. The growth trend tells you more than appearance does, especially with one or two calves you see every day, where a slow decline is invisible.

When can I wean a calf?

Not on age alone. A calf is ready when it can get enough nutrition from solid feed to keep growing without milk. That reads off liveweight, age, meal intake, pasture intake, health, rumen development, and whether it can compete in the mob.

The solid-feed trigger. DairyNZ's indicator before full weaning is at least 1 kg/day of meal, or 2 kg/day of pasture. Their wider checklist adds meeting the weight target, competing in the mob, and being drenched and vaccinated.

The weight targets. DairyNZ's common weaning weights are about 70 kg for Jerseys, 80 kg for Friesian × Jersey crossbreds, and 90 kg for Friesians. MPI's dairy code frames the same territory as liquid feed until six weeks of age and/or 65 kg or 80 kg liveweight, with sufficient liquid feed to meet total nutrient requirements until at least four weeks.

70 / 80 / 90 kg are useful examples for those breeds in that system. Beef calves, dairy-beef calves, small breeds and large continental breeds do not all wean at the same weight. Use breed, growth rate and solid-feed intake together rather than chasing one universal number.

Reduce the milk gradually. Full milk today and nothing tomorrow is not weaning, it's a nutritional shock. DairyNZ recommend a gradual, stepwise removal over one to two weeks. Through that period, watch meal intake, appetite, behaviour, liveweight, manure and growth. If growth drops away sharply, the calf probably wasn't ready.

✅ The step most people skip

DairyNZ recommend weighing calves again within 7–10 days after weaning to confirm they've actually gained. A calf can look ready on the day and still take a growth check afterwards. That one follow-up weight turns weaning from an event into a process.

Why does my bottle-fed calf have scours?

Many possible causes: incorrect feeding, sudden diet change, bacterial or viral infection, Cryptosporidium, coccidiosis and others. Don't assume every scouring calf has simply been overfed. The immediate danger is usually dehydration and electrolyte loss rather than the underlying bug, and a young calf goes downhill quickly.

No treatment recipes here, deliberately — the right treatment depends on the cause, and the cause isn't distinguishable from a description.

The feeding is only part of the management.

Hand-rearing a calf sounds simple when the job is described as "feed milk twice a day". But the feeding is the part you can't forget — the calf reminds you.

The questions that start to matter are the ones nothing reminds you about. Did this calf get enough colostrum? What milk is it on? What did it weigh last week? Has it started eating enough meal? Was this the one that scoured? Is it actually ready to wean?

With one calf that's easy to hold in your head. Add a few more animals, paddock moves, treatments and the rest of the week's work, and those details get mixed up surprisingly fast. The records that earn their keep are the milestones and the changes.

What should I record for a hand-reared calf?

Record the changes that help you make the next decision. You don't need to log every bottle forever unless that detail earns its place in your system.

The best time to design a calf-rearing system is before you're standing in the shed with a hungry newborn.
