Rotational grazing for small farms: pasture recovery, rest periods & records

A grazing area that has rested 30 days is not necessarily ready to graze. This guide is about the two decisions that actually matter — when to move livestock on, and when the pasture has recovered enough to come back.

The simple part and the hard part.

Rotational grazing sounds simple: graze an area, move the livestock, let the pasture rest, then come back later.

The difficult part is deciding when to move the livestock on, and when the pasture is ready to graze again.

A grazing area that has rested for 30 days is not necessarily ready to graze again. Pasture can grow quickly in warm, moist conditions and barely move through a cold winter or dry summer. Two paddocks on the same farm can also recover at completely different rates because of pasture species, soil, fertility, previous grazing and how much leaf was left behind.

So rest days are useful — but they are not the answer.

The better questions are:

Those two decisions sit at the heart of good rotational grazing.

On a small farm or lifestyle block, you do not need complicated pasture software to start answering them. A few simple observations, consistent grazing records and occasionally getting down into the grass can tell you a surprising amount.

What is rotational grazing?

Rotational grazing means moving livestock between grazing areas rather than giving them continuous access to the same pasture.

A basic rotation looks like this:

Graze → move livestock → rest → recover → graze again

The rest period gives pasture plants time to rebuild leaf area and energy reserves before they are grazed again.

As you divide a property into more grazing areas, you gain more control over where livestock eat and how long each area gets to recover.

But adding more paddocks or fields does not automatically create good rotational grazing. The important part is what happens between grazings.

If livestock return before the pasture has recovered, repeatedly grazing new growth can gradually weaken desirable plants. If pasture is left too long during rapid growth, feed quality can decline and older leaves begin to die.

The aim is not to achieve a particular number of rest days. It is to give the pasture enough recovery for the conditions you actually have.

How long should pasture rest between grazings?

There is no single correct rest period. That is probably the most important thing to understand about rotational grazing.

Grass does not grow according to the calendar. A 25-day rest during rapid spring growth can produce a completely different pasture from a 25-day rest in winter. The same is true during a dry summer when soil moisture becomes limiting.

Useful starting points can help establish a grazing rotation, but they should remain starting points rather than rules.

These targets are editable because pasture growth varies enormously between farms, seasons and individual grazing areas. Even two paddocks beside one another may eventually need different targets.

The useful habit is to compare:

How long has this area rested?

with:

How much has the pasture actually recovered?

Over time, that gives you much better information than simply copying somebody else's rotation.

Rest period and pasture recovery are not the same thing.

I got a particularly good reminder of this on our own Northland block. One morning I compared three paddocks.

Paddock 3 had been resown in ryegrass and clover and grazed more carefully. Paddock 2 had a history of harder grazing and contained a lot of kikuyu, which grows much more slowly through our winter.

If I had ranked those paddocks only by days rested, I would have chosen the wrong one. That comparison changed how I think about the number.

Rest days tell you how long the pasture has been left alone. Recovery tells you what actually happened during that time.

That distinction can also help diagnose problems. If a grazing area has had plenty of time to rest and still recovers poorly, continually giving it another week may not solve the underlying problem.

What you leave behind affects the next recovery.

One of the easiest mistakes on a small farm is grazing the best areas too hard because they look like they have plenty of feed.

But the pasture you leave behind — the post-grazing residual — can have a major influence on what happens next.

A grass plant needs leaf area to capture sunlight. Leave useful green leaf behind and the plant can continue photosynthesising as it regrows. Graze it extremely hard and there is less leaf available, so the plant relies more heavily on stored energy before enough new leaf has developed.

Repeated hard grazing can therefore create a frustrating cycle:

Graze too low → slower recovery → less feed available → return too early → graze too low again

The problem can look like an inadequate rest period when part of the real issue is what happened during the previous grazing.

That is why leaving some pasture behind is not necessarily "wasted grass". Some of it is helping power the next recovery.

How much pasture should you leave after grazing?

There is no single residual target that fits every livestock class and every pasture. Published targets vary according to:

That variation is itself a good reason not to treat one number as universal. On a lifestyle block or mixed small farm, the trend within your own pasture can often be more useful than pretending a rough estimate is perfectly precise.

For example, you might eventually notice:

"When we graze this paddock harder, it consistently takes longer to recover."

or:

"This paddock recovers much more quickly when we leave a better leafy residual."

That is useful management knowledge because it comes from your own conditions.

How do you know when pasture has recovered?

Rest days are one indicator. They should not be the only one.

Walk through the grazing area and look at what the plants are doing. Useful things to check include:

💡 A useful rule for My Block Hand

Use the rest target as a signal to check the pasture — not as an automatic instruction to graze it.

And if a paddock never recovers properly, however long you rest it, the problem may not be grazing at all. Soil constraints — acidity, or a nutrient that is limiting — set a ceiling that no rest period can lift. Assessing ryegrass recovery with no equipment at all.

If your pasture contains perennial ryegrass, one simple way of assessing recovery requires no equipment.

Ryegrass tillers generally carry up to three live leaves before the oldest leaf begins to die. That makes leaf stage a useful indicator of recovery.

Walk across the pasture, choose ryegrass tillers from several different locations and count the live leaves. As a general guide:

If you consistently reach grazing areas when the ryegrass only has one or one-and-a-half leaves, the rotation may be running faster than the pasture can recover. If everything is becoming mature before livestock return during fast growth, the rotation may be too slow.

The three-leaf approach applies to ryegrass, not every species in a diverse pasture, so it should be used alongside other observations rather than as a universal rule. Leaf-stage guidance and residual targets are set out in DairyNZ's Perennial Ryegrass Grazing Management pocket guide (PDF).

You don't need expensive equipment to start measuring pasture.

Rotational grazing can become considerably more informed without sophisticated equipment.

Start with your eyes. Walk the grazing area. Look for:

Use pasture height. A ruler or sward stick can give you a repeatable pasture-height measurement. Height is not the same thing as dry matter, but recording it consistently can still show useful trends. Use a plate meter if you want more detail. A rising plate meter can estimate pasture cover in kilograms of dry matter per hectare when an appropriate calibration is used. It can be useful, but it is not necessary for sensible rotational grazing on a small property. The seasonal calibration equations are published on DairyNZ's pasture assessment page — the multiplier and adder change month by month, which is why a raw reading means different things in April and December.

Calibrate your own eye. Before measuring a grazing area, estimate its height or pasture cover. Then measure it. Repeatedly comparing your estimate with an actual measurement will improve your ability to judge pasture visually.

The goal is not to turn every small farmer into a pasture scientist. It is to become better at reading your own pasture.

📏 A note on accuracy

Plate-meter conversions were developed on ryegrass-based dairy pasture. On a mixed or older block sward they are an estimate rather than a measurement, so the useful signal is the trend on your own place rather than the absolute number. That is also why My Block Hand doesn't invent a sward-stick centimetre-to-kg conversion — no published equation exists for mixed block pasture, so it tracks in whichever unit you pick instead.

Why grazing rotations should change through the year.

A fixed rotation assumes pasture grows at the same rate all year. It doesn't.

During periods of rapid growth, grazing areas may recover much faster than the target rest period. During winter, drought or other growth-limiting conditions, those same areas can take far longer.

The grazing rotation therefore needs to respond to pasture growth rather than forcing pasture to match a fixed calendar.

A useful principle is:

When pasture growth slows, the grazing rotation generally needs to slow as well.

That may involve:

One of the most damaging responses to slow growth can be repeatedly returning to pasture earlier because feed is getting tight. That solves today's feed shortage by borrowing from the next grazing.

A simple seven-paddock rotation.

Imagine a small farm with seven grazing paddocks. If livestock spend three days in each paddock, a complete circuit takes about 21 days.

During rapid spring growth, the first paddock may have recovered well by the time livestock return. Run exactly the same rotation during dry weather and the first paddock may still be short and stressed after those same 21 days.

Nothing about the calendar changed. The pasture did.

That is why:

"My grazing rotation is 21 days"

is less useful than:

"This pasture has rested for 21 days, and this is how far it has recovered."

The first is a schedule. The second is management information.

Pasture recovery and parasite control are different questions.

Rotational grazing is sometimes discussed as a parasite-control strategy. It is important not to confuse pasture recovery with parasite safety.

A grazing area can have enough pasture to feed livestock while still carrying infective parasite larvae. Rest periods can form part of a parasite-management programme, but they should not be treated as a guarantee that a pasture is safe. What grazing records are actually worth keeping?

You do not need to record everything. Start with information you are likely to use later.

Useful grazing records include:

If you want more detail, add pasture height or dry-matter estimates.

The important thing is consistency. One pasture measurement tells you little. Several rotations of the same grazing area begin to tell a story. For example:

Last time we left more residual here and it recovered in 24 days. The previous grazing was harder and it took more than 30 days.

That does not prove residual was the only reason. But repeated observations allow patterns to emerge. That is where your own farm records become more useful than a generic recommendation from someone else's property.

Turn general rest targets into your own targets.

When you start rotational grazing, general seasonal targets provide a useful starting point. Over time, they should become your targets.

Your soil, rainfall, temperature, pasture species, grazing pressure and management are not identical to anybody else's. Even grazing areas on the same property can behave very differently.

On our own block, the three paddocks I compared had rested for 24, 37 and 42 days, yet the 24-day paddock had the strongest recovery. One universal winter target would therefore have described those three paddocks poorly.

With enough observations you can begin to say:

"This grazing area generally needs about this long to recover at this time of year."

instead of:

"Somebody said pasture needs 30 days."

That is a much more useful management position.

These measurements provide another layer of information alongside rest periods. They still do not replace looking at the pasture.

When one paddock is grazed in breaks.

Rotational grazing does not always involve moving between entire paddocks. Temporary electric fencing can be used to progressively move livestock through one larger grazing area.

This introduces an important complication: the first strip begins recovering while livestock are still grazing the final strip. There is therefore no honest single rest-day number that applies to the entire paddock.

Grazing withholding periods.

Pasture records can also matter for reasons other than grass growth.

If a grazing area has been treated with a product carrying a withholding period, forgetting the application date can create a livestock-safety or compliance problem.

Common rotational grazing mistakes.

Treating rest days as the goal. Rest days measure time. Pasture recovery is the biological process we actually care about.

Grazing the best pasture too hard. The areas with the most feed are tempting to "clean up". Repeatedly doing that can leave too little useful leaf for fast recovery.

Returning early because feed is short. This can be difficult to avoid, but repeatedly grazing pasture before recovery can make subsequent feed shortages worse.

Using the same rest target all year. Twenty-five days in spring and twenty-five days during a dry summer do not represent the same amount of pasture growth.

Assuming every grazing area recovers at the same rate. Soil, drainage, slope, shade, fertility, pasture species and grazing history can vary significantly even across a small property.

Measuring without recording. A pasture measurement becomes far more useful when you can compare it with the same grazing area next month or next year.

Recording without looking. The opposite is also true. A perfectly accurate figure saying 37 days rested cannot tell you whether there is enough recovered pasture to graze.

The questions that come up most.

How long should pasture rest between grazings?

There is no universal rest period. The pasture needs enough time to recover under the current growing conditions. Seasonal targets provide useful starting points, but the condition of the pasture should influence the final grazing decision.

Is 21 days enough rest for rotational grazing?

Sometimes. During rapid pasture growth, 21 days may be enough for some grazing areas. During winter, drought or other slow-growth periods, it may be far too short.

Should I rotate livestock faster during spring?

Often the grazing rotation can become faster as pasture growth accelerates. If areas consistently become overly mature before livestock return, the rotation may be too slow for current conditions.

Should rest periods increase when pasture growth slows?

Generally, yes. Slower pasture growth means more time is required to replace what was removed during the previous grazing.

How do I know when ryegrass has recovered?

Leaf stage is one useful indicator. Around 2.5–3 live leaves per ryegrass tiller is commonly used as a practical grazing stage, alongside pasture cover, residual condition and livestock requirements.

How much pasture should I leave behind?

There is no one correct residual for every livestock class and pasture type. Avoid repeatedly grazing so hard that very little useful green leaf remains, and use targets appropriate to your livestock, pasture and farming system.

Can rotational grazing help control worms?

It can form part of parasite management, but resting pasture does not automatically make it parasite-free. Parasite survival varies with weather, species and grazing history, so a wider parasite-management programme is needed.

Do I need to measure pasture cover?

No. Keeping rest-period records and regularly observing pasture already provides useful information. Measuring pasture height or cover simply adds another layer when you want it.

The most useful number is the one from your own pasture.

Rotational grazing becomes easier when you stop looking for one perfect number. There probably isn't one.

The goal is not for an app, spreadsheet or grazing chart to make the decision for you. It is to have enough information available to make a better decision yourself.
